2. Born in the Country

Trad., adapted & arranged by Robin Greenstein

Guitar, Vocal - Robin
Bass - Barry Weisenfeld
Harmonica - Adam Carper
Percussion - Cheryl Prashkar

I first heard this as a teenager and loved the sassiness of the woman narrator. I had forgotten where I heard it until a Canadian DJ and blogger named Mike Regenstreif identified it as a Judy Roderick re-write of a song by a blues artist named Rabbit Brown. It was on her 1965 album "Woman Blue" and I believe she played in on a 12-string. This is played in open G tuning.

Born In The Country

I was born in the country, you thought I was easy to rule
I was born in the country, you thought I was easy to rule
But times are changing, babe, a country girl ain't anybody's fool

You're a mean tight papa, make a longtime woman hurt down deep
You're a mean tight papa, make a longtime woman hurt down deep
I'm gonna find me a candy man, who'll rock this poor girl down to sleep

I gave sugar for sugar, now I give salt for salt
I gave sugar for sugar, now I give salt for salt
If you don't like it baby, I guess it's your own goddam fault

I'm leaving you baby, I got to be moving on
I'm leaving you baby, I got to be moving on
You don't believe it honey, you just sit and count the days I'm gone

You walk by my doorway, honey you walk right by my gate
You w
alk by my doorway, honey you walk right by my gate
If you walk by my window, honey you won't get by my .38

Sometimes baby, I think you're too sweet to die
Sometimes baby, I think you're too sweet to die
But then sometimes baby, I think you oughta be buried alive

I was born in the country, you thought I was easy to rule
I was born in the country, you thought I was easy to rule
But times are changing, babe, a country girl ain't anybody's fool
But times are changing, babe, a country girl ain't anybody's fool
But times are changing, babe, a country girl ain't anybody's fool
